Ideas for Naming Your Bridal Shop

The best place to start is brainstorming. So, grab a pen and paper or open a new spreadsheet. Then, set a ten-minute timer and write down everything you can think of, from your favorite words and phrases to even the silliest things that pop into your head.

Next, go through the following pro tips. Read through each one and spend a few minutes adding new ideas, phrases, and terms to your list.

By the end, you’ll have a master list of ideas related to your business.

From there, you can combine words, create new terms, or mix and match until you land on something you like.

1. Keep It As Simple As Possible

The best business names are short, simple, and easy to remember. Look at some of the items around you.

What brands are behind them?

For me, Dell, Target, Swiffer, Ikea, and Deering immediately come to mind. And they each have something in common—they’re incredibly simple.

They’re not the most descriptive names, but they’re catchy and easy to remember. With that said, not every name has to be one word and just a few syllables. In fact, David’s Bridal is the most famous bridal shop. And it’s significantly longer than the other examples.

Just keep in mind that the shorter and simpler the name, the better.

2. Steer Clear of Complex Words

Complex words are hard to spell, hear, and pronounce. And with the rise of voice search assistants like Siri and Alexa, your business may never rise to the top of those results if your name isn’t easy for them to understand.

Furthermore, words like sequoia and ipomoeas sound pretty but challenging to spell. And most don’t have those vowel combinations memorized. Plus, I can think of about six different ways to pronounce them.

So, it may be challenging to find you on Google since no one knows how to spell your name.

Remember to keep spelling and pronunciation in mind if you want to be found in search results and social media.

3. Avoid Homophones and Numbers

Going back to voice search, if you say the word “four,” how does the assistant know which meaning and spelling you’re going for? Because of that, it’s always a good idea to avoid homophones (i.e., to, too, and two) as well as numbers in your name.

You should also try to avoid words that are commonly misspelled.

4. Steal From Your Audience (In a Nice Way)

When I say steal, I mean to steal the words they’re already using to describe your industry.

Aside from the words “wedding” and “bridal,” there are thousands of words and phrases related to the industry. You can also use an online thesaurus for even more ideas you may not have thought of on your own.

Start by brainstorming everything you can think of. Then, pop a few terms into a thesaurus to dig even deeper and add non-obvious ideas to your list.

There are countless places you can look to see the exact phrases and terms they use when talking about their weddings.

You can try looking in places like:

  • Wedding and bridal magazines
  • Online forums
  • Facebook and Instagram
  • Wedding-related blogs
  • Venue and vendor reviews
  • Wedding photographer websites

It might take a bit of time, but even one or two exciting phrases may be enough to get your creative juices flowing.

Furthermore, you may get even better ideas by sitting down with someone in your target audience. Write up a few conversational questions to ask and take note of the exact words they use to talk about their big day.

Be sure to add any unique finds to your master list!

5. Location-Specific Phrases

Neighborhoods, nicknames, and city names are all great ways to create a sense of local pride and community with your bridal shop. You could also consider using the name of a street or district as well. However, make sure your name doesn’t limit your bridal shop if you decide to move or expand to new areas later.

6. Will the name look good as a logo?

Another consideration is the use of your name as a logo. Some names are too long, and others may not lend themselves to a good image. Using a catchy logo will help reinforce the brand and make it look good on company vehicles, business cards, shirts, etc.

7. Still Stuck? Go With Your Name

As a business owner, your face and name are often the personality and brand behind your business. And if you’re still struggling to land on the perfect name, you can always consider using your name or nicknames as well.

David’s Bridal is an excellent example of this in action.

With that said, keep in mind that using your name or nickname may make it harder to sell your business if you decide to do so in the future.

Is Your Bridal Shop Business Name Available?

At this point, you should have several top considerations to choose from. And the best way to narrow it down further is to check each one for availability.

This step is helpful because using a name that someone else is using could be very costly, time-consuming to rebrand your business, and possibly embarrassing. There are several places to look to check whether a name is available to use, so let’s walk through each one.

Can the business name be registered in your state?

If you plan to use a specific business name, you may be required by the state to verify it’s available to use.

Is your name already trademarked?

When searching for a name for your new business, you should check that your new name isn’t trademarked by someone else. If it is, you may not be allowed to use it legally.

Thankfully, the United States Patent Trademark Office (USPTO) makes trademark searching a breeze through their Trademark Database.

A name isn’t necessarily available if it doesn’t appear in this search. Every business has some limited protection through a common law trademark. This means another business can’t open up down the street with the same name, as this creates confusion for customers.  Also, check local competitors by doing a Google search and looking through the Yellow Pages.

If your name is available and you want to protect it from being used by anyone else, you can register it with the USPTO.

By now, you should have a long list of terms, words, and phrases related to your new bridal shop. Next, you should get rid of any ideas that are complex, hard to spell, or commonly misspelled.

You can then start combining words, forming new words, and brainstorming potential names for your business.

So, take some time right now to create a list of potential names.

And from there, you can narrow things down to THE perfect bridal shop name. Just don’t forget to consider your logo, domain name availability, trademarks, and how it sounds in conversation before making your final decision.
